Spring Spree RunMarch 20, 2010 The dictionary gives several meanings to the word "spree". One is "a lively frolic or outing" (no, it wasn't that) and "a period or outburst of extreme activity" (now, this describes the race better). But it certainly was not spring-like weather. After several night-before phone calls we decided to go ahead with the "Spring Spree" race hoping the early morning sunshine predicted would, at least, turn the ice to slush. That didn't happen and the trail was very slick. A few minutes after the start we found out just how treacherous conditions were. Rosalie Murch, competing in the 5K race walk, had a nasty fall, striking her head. Many thanks to Ian Monk, who interrupted his race walk and Alan Johnson, who completely dropped out of the 10K to help Rosalie from the one mile mark back to the parking lot. I am happy to report that, after a visit to Urgent care and a couple of days of watchfulness by family, Rosalie is fine. Times were slow, as expected, but may be world records unless someone has held a 10K/5K race on an long-track speed skating track because that is what the race resembled. Overall 10K winners were 24 year-old Omar Martinez (37:18) and 19 year-old Jessica Broderic (41:41). Age division winners were (in order of overall finish) Keith Johnson (M 45-49; third overall), Scott Daily (M 40-44, fourth overall), Antonio Cuevas (M30-34, second overall), Scott Kukel (M30-34), Dan Shaw (M50-54), Felix Lopez (M55-59), Kate Shapland (F30-34), Kathy Johnson (F40-44), Jim "The B-Man" Romero (M65-69), Link Lubken (M60-64), Rich Romero (M70-74), and Pat Tolleson (F60-64). Overall 5K run winner was Jane Harbert (F45-49) in a very respectable time considering the conditions of 25:25. Overall race walker winners were (in order of overall finish) Jan McBee (F55-59) and Ian Monk (M50-54). However, Ian took a huge chunk of time helping Rosalie Murch. Runners up in divisions were (in order of overall finish) were: Isaiah Jansen (M20-24), David Rothenburger (M40-44), Michael Brenner (M50-54), Gary Butler (M35-39), Bill Faulkner (M65-69), Janet Ralston (F45-49), Rich Martinez (M60-64), Andrea Jacobson (F25-29), Lee Bengston (70-74), and Dan Wall (M45-49) .Many thanks to all the volunteers: Connie Ahrnsbrak, Rosalia Murch and Tom Alison with registration, Joe Sanchez and Tom Baird for handling timing at the finish line. Joe Sanchez for bringing equipment, Earl Pitzer for help in setting up the course; Bonnie Pitzer, Cathy Wise, Davia Wise and Jamison Wise for being race marshals, clean up and helping with awards and drawing. Thanks to the sponsors: Great Harvest Bread of Lakewood (10 delicious loaves of bread), Boulder Running Company of Denver and Boulder (gift certificates) , Roadrunner Sports of Westminster (merchandise), Running Wild of Highlands Ranch (gift certificates). ..
